(KPL) Minister of Public Works and Transport, Mr. Ngampasong Muangmany, reaffirmed on March 18, 2025 the Lao government’s commitment to infrastructure development, emphasizing that expanding transportation networks—especially in rural areas—remains a top priority.

Speaking to the media, Minister Ngampasong highlighted that the Lao People's Revolutionary Party views infrastructure as a fundamental economic sector. The government is focusing on improving national highways, expanding inter-provincial and district roads, and enhancing rural transportation networks. However, he stressed that infrastructure development must follow a structured plan, with clearly defined responsibilities at each level.

This coordinated effort has led to significant progress in road construction, strengthening connectivity between villages, districts, and provinces.

He also emphasized that under the Resolution of the 9th Party Congress, transportation development plays a crucial role in boosting production and economic growth. As a result, the government and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport have made substantial investments in infrastructure, including highways and railways, to facilitate both domestic and international trade.

Laos has seen rapid expansion in road networks, including 12,723 bridges built nationwide—an increase of 12,624 bridges since 1986 ;sphalt roads now reach all provincial capitals, while 147 out of 148 districts have access to paved roads ; Upgrades to major national highways that form part of the ASEAN road network, including R3, Route 2W, Route 2E, Route 13 North and South, Route 8, Route 9, Route 12, and Route 18B and the successful construction of the Vientiane–Vang Vieng expressway and the Laos-China railway, significantly improving domestic and international connectivity.

Since its launch, the Laos-China railway has driven strong growth in transportation services. Between its opening and January 2025, the railway has transported more than 8.2 million passengers and over 11.62 million tons of goods

Additionally, the aviation sector has generated $723.59 million in national revenue, with over 2.8 million flights recorded.

As Laos continues to expand its infrastructure, the government remains focused on ensuring connectivity, fostering economic growth, and meeting international standards. The development of modern transportation networks is expected to further strengthen Laos' role in regional trade and enhance the living conditions of its people.
