(KPL) Laos and Cambodia have agreed to strengthen cooperation in politics, defense, economy, trade, energy, education, and border affairs following the official visit of Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.

The visit took place from December 4-5, 2024, at the invitation of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, aiming to enhance the historic friendship and deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.

An official welcoming ceremony was held at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh, where Prime Minister Sonexay, his spouse, and his delegation paid a courtesy call to King Norodom Sihamoni. During bilateral talks, the two prime ministers and their delegations discussed socio-economic cooperation and reviewed progress across various sectors. They reaffirmed the importance of the longstanding friendship between Laos and Cambodia and emphasized a shared commitment to strengthening their strategic partnership.

Both sides agreed to exchange visits at all levels to effectively implement signed agreements and to strengthen existing mechanisms such as the Joint Committee on Bilateral Cooperation and the Joint Border Committee. Cooperation in border security, peaceful border relations, and promotion of trade, investment, and tourism—particularly in electricity and agriculture—was identified as a priority.

The leaders witnessed the signing of three significant agreements: one on the avoidance of double taxation and prevention of tax evasion, and two Memorandums of Understanding on cultural and arts cooperation and agricultural cooperation. The Lao delegation also visited the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone to explore further opportunities for collaboration.

Looking ahead, the two nations pledged mutual support at regional and international forums, including ASEAN and the United Nations. Preparations for Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s state visit to Laos in 2025 were also discussed. Prime Minister Sonexay expressed gratitude for Cambodia’s support during Laos’ ASEAN chairmanship in 2024, reaffirming the country’s commitment to fostering the bilateral relationship for mutual benefit.

King Norodom Sihamoni expressed hope for strengthened ties and continued growth in Lao-Cambodian relations, underscoring the importance of cooperation for the prosperity of both nations. The visit is seen as a significant step toward reinforcing the partnership between Laos and Cambodia, setting a strong foundation for future collaboration.
