(KPL) Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune on behalf of the Lao government pinned a friendship medal on outgoing UNICEF Representative to Laos Pia Rebello Britto in recognition of her contribution to the socio-economic development in the Lao PDR.
At a ceremony held in Vientiane on July 1, the deputy foreign minister highly valued the efforts made by the UNICEF official in improving the quality of life of women, children and young people, providing assistance for children, leading projects to improve education, health, nutrition and gender equality.
She also played an important role in mobilizing support for post-Covid-19 recovery efforts in the Lao PDR.
In reply, Dr Pia Rebello Britto expressed thanks to the Lao government and people as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the support and cooperation given to her over recent years.
Over the recent years, UNICEF has provided over 160 million US dollars to the Lao PDR to support cooperation projects in the country. These include 68 million US dollars for the 2017-2021 period and 100 million US dollars for the years 2022-2026.
