(KPL) The government will focus on the development in priority areas to build an independent and self-reliant economic system.
“Priority areas include improving finance and monetary sectors to ensure budgetary self reliance through increasing revenue collection and modernizing revenue management so as to cut loans from international development partners, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone told the ongoing 7th Ordinary Session of the National Assembly on Friday.
Members of the National Assembly asked the prime minister several questions on how his government will translate the Politburo’s resolution on building an Independence and Self-reliant Economy and what priorities it will focus on.
“The government will promote food production to ensure food security, increase commercial farming of rice and other cash crops, meat, fish and eggs for domestic consumption. This will help cut imports and maintain a balance between imports and exports,” said the Prime Minister.
He said that the government will continue to promote wind power and solar power generation projects according to the potentials in the country as well as to inspect all projects that have been approved. If proved to have no progress or to be ineffective, these projects will be revoked and transferred to other investors who are capable of carrying out them.
The government will also allocate specific areas of land for crop cultivation and animal husbandry, and promote domestic processing industry. Irrigated rice farmlands will be protected to prevent the land from being used for other purposes.
Agricultural production will be improved through the use of high quality animal breeds, animal feeds, seeds, manure and fertilizers.
The government will attach attention to the quality and quantitative development of electricity to ensure self reliance in energy supply. Although the country produces a lot of electricity with the majority exported, electricity is imported for domestic consumption because power transmission lines in the country are yet to be fully connected.
