KPL Party General Secretary and State President Thongloun Sisoulith received Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung in Vientiane on Thursday during Hung’s official visit to the Lao PDR from October 8–9. Hung’s visit, made at the invitation of his Lao counterpart Saleumxay Kommasith, is aimed at further strengthening the longstanding great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic partnership between Laos and Vietnam.

President Thongloun warmly welcomed Hung and expressed his appreciation for the Vietnamese Prime Minister’s visit, which is his first official overseas trip since taking office. The Lao leader noted that Hung’s decision to choose Laos as his first foreign destination demonstrates the importance and priority Vietnam places on strengthening the unique relationship between the two Parties, States and peoples of Laos and Vietnam.
President Thongloun also conveyed warm greetings to the Communist Party of Vietnam General Secretary and State President To Lam, as well as other senior Vietnamese leaders. He welcomed the outcomes of the official talks between the Lao and Vietnamese prime ministers held during Hung’s visit.
During their meeting, the two leaders exchanged views on the socio-economic development of their respective countries and congratulated each other on the progress and achievements made in recent years.
They also reviewed bilateral relations and cooperation, as well as plans for future collaboration. Both sides noted that exchanges of delegations at various levels have continued regularly and that close coordination has been maintained, particularly in implementing agreements reached by the two Politburos and the outcomes of the meetings of the Laos-Vietnam Intergovernmental Committee on Cooperation.
Both sides highlighted progress in a number of areas, including the handover and launch of a population-management database and Lao citizen identification card project, as well as the commencement of construction of the Laos-Vietnam Friendship University.

They agreed to continue strengthening cooperation in national defence and security and to maintain close coordination through bilateral mechanisms and international forums.
Economic, trade and investment cooperation was also highlighted as an important area for further development, with particular emphasis on strategic and high-potential projects designed to enhance connectivity between the economic foundations of the two countries.
The two sides further stressed the importance of promoting public awareness and education about the historical traditions and significance of Laos-Vietnam relations, particularly among young people and future generations.
Preparations are also continuing for activities marking the 2027 Laos-Vietnam Year of Friendship and Solidarity, which will commemorate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Laos-Vietnam Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.
The two sides said the commemorative activities should reflect the profound significance of the bilateral relationship and be conducted in a vibrant and meaningful manner.
For his part, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome extended by the Lao leadership. He briefed Thongloun on the outcomes of his official talks with Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith.
Hung reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to working closely with Laos to implement agreements reached by the leaders of the two countries and advance strategic cooperation projects, with the aim of translating bilateral commitments into concrete results and achieving the objectives set by both sides.
The meeting reaffirmed the two countries’ commitment to further deepening their longstanding friendship and special solidarity while expanding practical cooperation across a broad range of areas.
