Deputy Prime Minister Welcomes Thai Delegation Attending National Funeral

KPL On April 7, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, on behalf of Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, the Siphandone family, and the multi-ethnic people of Laos, received Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, and his delegation at the Prime Minister's Office in Vientiane. The Thai delegation was in Laos to attend the national funeral of General Khamtay Siphandone, former President of the Lao PDR.


(KPL)  On April 7, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, on behalf of Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, the Siphandone family, and the multi-ethnic people of Laos, received Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, and his delegation at the Prime Minister's Office in Vientiane. The Thai delegation was in Laos to attend the national funeral of General Khamtay Siphandone, former President of the Lao PDR.

Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Suriya, His Majesty the King of Thailand, the Royal Family, and senior Thai leaders for their expressions of sympathy and the wreath sent by the King. He noted that the Thai delegation’s presence was a sign of deep respect and a reflection of the close friendship between the two nations.

Mr. Saleumxay also paid tribute to General Khamtay’s legacy, highlighting his pivotal role in the struggle for national liberation, national development, and regional diplomacy. He recalled that General Khamtay was the first Lao Prime Minister to visit Thailand in 1992 and co-chaired the opening of the first Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge in 1994 alongside the prime ministers of Laos, Thailand, and Australia. His efforts in establishing bilateral mechanisms such as the Lao-Thai Joint Committee laid the groundwork for the flourishing cooperation between the two countries.

The Deputy Prime Minister also praised the strong Laos–Thailand relations over the past 75 years, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, tourism, and infrastructure connectivity. He reaffirmed Laos’ commitment to continuing the vision and mission of General Khamtay Siphandone, advancing the nations’ strategic partnership for sustainable development.

In response, Mr. Suriya conveyed his deepest condolences on behalf of the Thai government and people to the Government and people of Laos, particularly the Siphandone family. He expressed confidence that Laos would overcome this period of mourning and continue progressing under the legacy of its respected leader.
