(KPL) The victory of Dien Bien Phu is not only the victory of the Vietnamese people and army, but also the victory of the people of Laos and Cambodia who were fighting together against the same enemy to liberate their motherlands.

The victory extinguished the aggressive will of old colonialism, forcing them to sign Geneva Accords on Indochina, and to recognize national independence, sovereignty of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Gen. Chansamone Chanyalath gave an interview to the media on May 2.

He highlighted the victory of Dien Bien Phu and the contribution of the Lao People's Army to Vietnamese people’s fight against colonialism.

Dien Bien Phu victory is the brightest victory in the history of anti-colonial struggle of heroic Vietnamese people and is written in the history of Vietnam and the world in the 20th century, according to Gen. Chansamone.

Dien Bien Phu victory destroyed the stand of the old colonial system of imperialism. It brightens up the truth in the semi-feudalist nation which used to be a colonial state with a small population, an obsolete economy, small military forces and limited military equipment.

Vietnam will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the resounding Dien Bien Phu Victory on May 7, 1954.

“This is the victory of the entire Vietnamese people and army in their nine-year resistance war against the French, leading to the Geneva Accords returning peace in Indochina,” Sr Lt Gen Nguyen Tan Cuong, chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army and deputy minister of National Defence was quoted as saying by VNA.

Although it was seven decades ago, the meaning and precious lessons learned from this important historical event still remain. They are a great source of encouragement for all our people in building and protecting the country today. It was the victory of the strength of "the entire people fighting the enemy" under the clear-sighted leadership of the Communist Party and President Ho Chi Minh.
