Bokeo Province
Bokeo Province is the smallest of the country's provinces, covering an area of 6,196 square kilometers . Bokeo Province borders Luang Namtha Province to the northeast, Oudomsay Province to the east, Sayaboury Province to the south, and Thailand to the southwest and Myanmar to the west and northwest.
Bokeo is located along the three-border intersection of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, from part of the Golden Triangle. Bokeo's provincial capital is Houayxay on the Mekong river. It is a home to a large number of minorities. Bokeo consists with five districts namely: Houayxay, Tonpheung, Pha-Oudom, Meung and Park Beng.
There are more than 450 villages with a total population of 145,919 people, consisting of many ethnic groups, each with own lifestyles and custom. The most lucrative occupation in Bokeo is gold panning and digging for precious stones, where you can see at Ban Nam Khok ( the Lue village), 6 km from the town and Ban Houai Sala ( The H’mong village) it’s around 18 Km far from the town of Houayxay.
At Ban Namkeung Kout, Ban Namkeung Mai and Ban Done Deng, it is 26 Km far from the central of Houayxay to the north where you can visit the traditional Lu village, who came originally from Mauang Sing, Luang Namtha. The village can be reached by boat trip, upstream from Houayxay.
