The law was introduced yesterday morning to the 9th Ordinary Session of the National Assembly (7th legislature) by the Deputy Minister of Post and Telecommunications Thansamay Kommasith. "It was necessary to make this law because computer systems play an important role in the society as today’s electronic media has a significant influence on people in the country as well as on socio-economic development," said Mr Thansamay adding that putting in place the law to prevent cybercrime would create more favourable conditions for the protection of databases, server systems, and computerised information.

(KPL) Lawmakers yesterday approved a law on cyber crime following several hours of discussion. The law was introduced yesterday morning to the 9th Ordinary Session of the National Assembly (7th legislature) by the Deputy Minister of Post and Telecommunications Thansamay Kommasith.

"It was necessary to make this law because computer systems play an important role in the society as today’s electronic media has a significant influenceon people in the country as well as on socio-economic development," said Mr Thansamay adding that putting in place the law to prevent cybercrime would create more favourable conditions for the protection of databases, server systems, and computerised information.

The Deputy Minister said that reason behind the making of the law was to ensure national security, peace and order thus ensuring national socio-economic development and integration into regional and international economic communities over the years to come.

Following the introduction of the new draft law by the Deputy Minister, the Vice President of the National Assembly, Mr Xaysomphone Phomvihane urged relevant sectors to make contributions to the law to ensure it is suitable with the current conditions of socio-economic development.

“It is necessary to make sure that the law represents the comments of all representatives of all ethnic groups before it can be adopted," the Vice Chairman of the Assembly told lawmakers before the law was approved.
