(KPL) The ongoing National Assembly (NA) meeting on May11 approved a draft-amended Law on Water and Water Resources, which will focus on better protection of water and water resources for sustainable use, as well as to bring the law in line with the national economic development.

The amended draft law, which was proposed by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sommad Pholsena, consists of 13 parts, 7 chapters and 98 articles, of which 28 are amended, 67 are new, and three are old articles.

The old version of the law on water and water resources was promulgated in 1996, which consisted of 10 chapters and 49 articles, according to Minister Sommad’s statement at the ongoing 3rd Ordinary Session of the National Assembly.

Mr Sommad said that the amendment is to ensure effective administration of rivers and gravel, plants and aquatic animals, irrigation systems, energy and mines.

The amended law defines principles, regulations and measures relating to the management, prevention, development and use of water and water resources to ensure they are effective and sustainable in response to the living conditions of people, agriculture, industry production, and regional and international integration. It also aims to contribute to national safeguarding, construction and development.

In his deliberations before opening the debate on the amendment, Vice President of National Assembly Bounpone Bouttanavong gave NA members advice and guidelines on various points of the draft law.

On the same day, an amended Law on Statistics was also a hot topic of debate, which is expected to be approved at this NA session.

December 2025 is particularly significant as it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Lao PDR and, on 19 December, the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and the Lao PDR.
