(KPL/VNA) U Aung Lin Dwe, a member of parliament from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), was elected as Speaker of Myanmar's Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) in its first session on March 18.
According to the state-owned Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV), the first day of the first regular session saw full attendance, with all 213 members of parliament present.
On March 16, U Khin Yi was elected as Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) during the first day of its first regular session.
The USDP won a majority of seats in the Union Parliament in the general election completed earlier this year, according to official results released by the Union Election Commission.
Myanmar's Union Parliament consists of two houses, with a total of 664 seats: the 440-seat Pyithu Hluttaw and the 224-seat Amyotha Hluttaw.
Following the election of the House speakers, the newly formed Union Parliament will elect a new President.
