(KPL) Laos and Azerbaijan held their inaugural Political Consultations in Vientiane on 8 December, co-chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Maythong Thammavongsa of Laos and Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov of Azerbaijan.

The meeting marked the upcoming 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, first established on 22 May 1995. It also followed discussions between President Thongloun Sisoulith and President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in October 2024.

Both sides reviewed opportunities to deepen cooperation across a range of sectors, including politics, trade, tourism and education. Particular attention was given to collaboration on unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance, an area of shared concern for both countries due to the presence of explosive remnants of war.

The two delegations agreed to further strengthen traditional ties, expand economic links, and continue supporting one another in regional and international forums.

During his visit, Deputy Minister Mammadov paid a courtesy call on Ms Sounthone Sayachack, Vice President of the National Assembly, and attended a reception marking three decades of bilateral relations.
