(VNA/KPL) The upstream oil and gas task force of Indonesia (SKK Migas) has announced the discovery of two gas fields with significant potential to produce a mixture of propane and butane, which will be used as raw materials for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Djoko Siswanto, head of SKK Migas, revealed that the two fields are located offshore in the Northwest of Java and are expected to commence operations by the end of this year. With a daily production capacity of 200 tonnes at the Jambi Merang field and 180 tonnes at the ONWJ field, these are set to enhance Indonesia's energy security and reduce its reliance on imported energy sources.

Yuliot Tanjung, Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, stressed that the Indonesian Government is intensifying its efforts to explore gas fields with potential for LPG production in Jambi province and other regions.

The ministry is also focusing on mapping areas with gas reserves capable of producing propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10), essential raw materials for domestic LPG production, he added.
