(KPL/Prensa Latina)  The Second World Conference on Air Pollution and Health will reportedly be held in the northern city of Cartagena from 25 to 27 March.

The event, sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to promote global action to mitigate the effects of climate change and combat pollution that affects the health of billions of people around the world.

According to the United Nations, poor air quality is responsible for the deaths of at least seven million people worldwide each year, the vast majority from non-communicable (chronic) diseases such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and lung cancer.

The meeting will bring together ministers of health, environment and energy, officials from national, intergovernmental and development agencies, as well as researchers, academics and civil society.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Accelerating action for clean air, access to clean energy and climate action”.

According to Colombia’s Vice Minister of Public Health, Jaime Urrego, this will be an opportunity for dozens of countries to come together in a global spirit to confirm and learn about the evidence of the impact of pollution on health, to share solutions, and to build high-level political commitment to stop pollution.
