(KPL/VNA) The East Nusa Tenggara provincial government has declared a 58-day emergency status in response to the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki which began on November 3 and has caused serious consequences.

According to the latest reports from Indonesian authorities, this eruption has resulted in the death of nine people and injuries to 63 others, damaging nearly 2,400 homes and at least 25 schools.

At least 16,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate, but as of the morning of November 5, only about 2,500 people had been moved to safety. A provincial official noted that evacuation efforts are hindered by thick ash covering many roads.

Following an initial eruption on the evening of November 3, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted again on November 4, though with less intensity. The volcano remains under the highest alert status. Due to the volcanic impact, four small airports on Flores island are temporarily closed.
