(KPL) Australia’s Assistant Minister for Trade, Tim Ayres, will travel to Laos this week to co-chair the 56th ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting, highlighting Australia’s growing commitment to Southeast Asia. This visit marks a significant milestone, as 2024 celebrates 50 years since Australia became ASEAN’s first dialogue partner.

Southeast Asia continues to be a major hub of global economic activity, recognized as one of the world’s fastest-growing regions. In Laos, Ayres will co-chair the ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting, where he will advocate for the benefits of the recently upgraded ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA).

“These trade agreements, alongside our Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, chart a pathway for our exporters, investors, and businesses to make the most of the region’s incredible opportunities,” said today Tim Ayres.

Ayres will also attend the East Asia Summit Economic Ministers’ Meeting and the Third Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Ministers’ Meeting, further strengthening Australia’s economic engagement with the region.

“Greater engagement with Southeast Asia is a priority for the Albanese Labor Government, and we are determined to make the most of the enormous opportunities for Australian businesses in the region,” added Ayres.

This series of meetings in Laos emphasizes Australia’s role as a key economic partner in ASEAN, while highlighting the opportunities for cooperation and growth across Southeast Asia.
