(KPL/VNA) Singapore is looking to expand the production of a wide range of chips for mobile phones or computers through policies and incentives.

The government industrial planner JTC said it is preparing 11% more land in Singapore’s wafer fabrication parks in a bid to attract more top semiconductor giants and ride the artificial intelligence (AI) wave.

JTC is a Singaporean government agency responsible for the development of industrial infrastructure to support and catalyse the development of industries and transform existing businesses in the country.

Manufacturing is Singapore’s largest industry by far, representing a significant component of its gross domestic product – more than 20%. Meanwhile, the semiconductor sector employs more than 35,000 people and accounts for almost 20 per cent of the city state’s manufacturing output.

Currently, nine out of the 15 top semiconductor firms have set up bases in Singapore, including American chipmaker Micron and German wafer manufacturer Siltronic.

These semiconductor firms are currently clustered in four wafer fabrication parks that span 374 ha, the size of more than 500 football fields. These parks are in PasirRis, Tampines, Woodlands and the North Coast, with JTC being the master planner and developer of the land.
