Oudomxay was separated from Luang Prabang Province in 1963. It then was named Lan Xang Province. In 1965 it was renamed Muang - Xay Province and Oudomxay Province in 1969.

It is a province with rich history, culture and beautiful nature. It borders Luang Namtha Province and China to the north, Phongsaly Province to the east, Luang Prabang Province to the south and Bokeo Province to the west.

Chom-ong Cave in the same name village, Xay district, is about 45 km from the administration hub of the district. Chom-ong Cave is called by the name of the village, but people used to call it Bat Cave because there were so many bats living in the cave.

Chom-ong Cave is a big cave with many entrances and exits. It is about 16 km long, 15-50 m wide, and 25-100 m high. It is the most beautiful cave in the province.

Inside the cave, there is a stream. You can see stones and rock formations with beautiful patterns, as well as white glass stones that shine like large gems hanging on the stone walls like glowing lights in a beautiful natural way.

Chom-ong Cave was discovered in 2005 by scientists from the European Union. It was opened to the public in 2007. In 2010, the cave was developed into a national tourist site. The cave is still preserved in a natural way without any further modifications. Tourists can visit the cave with private cars. The road is good and weather is cool.  The tourist site is spacious, suitable for tourism and recreation.
