(KPL) Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune has led a delegation of Laos to Switzerland to participate in the 11th Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions – CCM held in Geneva between Sep 11-14.
The Lao delegation reported to the meeting the efforts made by the Lao government in addressing impacts posed by unexploded ordnance (UXOs) in the Lao PDR.
Addressing the General Debate of the meeting, Vice Minister Phoxay reiterated the Lao PDR’s policy and political commitment that promote and attach importance to the Convention on Cluster Munitions which aims to protect the lives of people from unexploded ordnance.
The Lao delegation also briefed the participants about the implementation of a survey and clearance of UXOs, victim assistance, and the incorporation of CCM into domestic legal instruments to ensure the effective addressing of UXOs.
The Lao delegates also expressed thanks to development partners and international organizations for their cooperation with and assistance to Laos on addressing UXOs in the country.
They called on international community to further provide assistance to those countries affected by cluster bombs to protect people’s lives and facilitate the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals.
The Lao delegation also held bilateral meeting with the secretariat of CCM.
Convention on Cluster Munitions is an international treaty approved in 2009. Laos signed the agreement as the second country in the world and hosted the first meeting of States Parties to CCM in Vientiane in 2010.
