(KPL) During the visit, Mr. Thongsalith separately received Ambassador Viant Valdés and Silvano Merced, Rector of the Manuel Fajardo University of Physical Culture and Sports Sciences in Havana.

During his visit to Laos, Mr. Merced signed a cooperation agreement with Sinthavone Dalavong, Director General of the National University of Laos, in the presence of Ambassador Viant Valdés, Marveris Sarmiento, Director of International Relations of the Cuban university, and other officials. The agreement focuses on exchanging experience and technical knowledge in sports science, technology and innovation, human resource development, and exchanges of students and academic staff.

The two institutions will also promote the development of faculty members, researchers, coaches and athletes, while exploring joint scientific research and other academic activities.

Mr. Sinthavone highlighted the longstanding friendship between Laos and Cuba and expressed confidence that the agreement would serve as a basis for practical and effective cooperation between the two institutions.

The Cuban delegation is also scheduled to meet Lao graduates who studied in Cuba and visit sports-related institutions during its stay in Laos.

Sports cooperation between Laos and Cuba dates back to the early years after Laos gained independence in 1975 and has included support for professional training and technical cooperation in sports and physical education. Cuban coaches have also provided technical support to Lao athletes.

With Cuban support, Lao athletes have achieved medals at regional and international competitions. At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, Laos won three bronze medals.
