Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane called for deeper regional cooperation on water management, clean energy, and digital growth at a meeting of Mekong-Lancang diplomats in Beijing on Wednesday.

Mr. Thongsavanh led the Lao delegation to the 11th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Framework, which brings together leaders from China, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. The Nov. 4 session was co-chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow under the theme of expanding regional partnerships and modernization.
Addressing the assembly, Thongsavanh urged member nations to accelerate investment in modern technology, human resources, and sustainable infrastructure—specifically highlighting agriculture, clean energy, and tourism.
"We must advance work toward a modern economy by promoting innovation, managing shared water resources effectively, and tackling critical sustainability challenges," Thongsavanh said, pointing to China's ongoing support through regional development initiatives.
The framework's Special Fund has financed 107 projects in Laos worth over $30 million since 2017, targeting cross-border trade, poverty reduction, and regional supply chain connectivity.
Ministers reviewed the group’s 2023–2027 action plan and laid the groundwork for the fifth Mekong-Lancang Leaders' Summit, scheduled for late 2026.
