(KPL) Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith on 12 December 2025 received General Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, who was in the Lao PDR for an official visit from 10–12 December.

President Thongloun welcomed General Shoigu and his delegation, saying the visit would help strengthen and expand bilateral cooperation, particularly in the area of strategic security in the Asia-Pacific region. He praised the long-standing friendship between Laos and Russia, noting that relations continue to deepen.

During the meeting, General Shoigu, on behalf of the Russian Government, presented President Thongloun with the Order of Alexander Nevsky — one of Russia’s highest honours, used since the era of the Russian Empire and now awarded by the President of the Russian Federation. The decoration recognises President Thongloun’s contributions to advancing cooperation and friendship between the two nations.

President Thongloun said the award symbolised not only his personal commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, but also the enduring solidarity and strategic partnership between Laos and Russia. He affirmed that the Lao PDR remained a reliable partner and expressed confidence that relations between the two countries would continue to grow.

He added that the Order of Alexander Nevsky — described as “a symbol of courage, endurance and service to the Russian nation” — would serve as an encouragement for him and the Lao people to further advance the traditional friendship and cooperation to new heights.
