
Secretary General Bounnhang Vorachit
(KPL) The 10th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party was closed on Friday with Vice President Bounnhang Vorachit elected as new Secretary General of the Party, replacing his predecessor Choummaly Sayasone who had been in the post for almost 10 years.
The Five-day congress, held on Jan 18-22 at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane Capital, also witnessed the approval of the new politburo, Central Committee of the Party, and its secretariat.
Four Party leaders - Mr Choummaly Sayasone, Mr Thongsing Thammavong, Mr Asang Laoly and Mr Somsavat Lengsavad were elected advisors to the 10th Party Central Committee. Secretary General Bounnhang Vorachit, Mr Thongloun Sisoulith, Ms Pany Yathortou, and Dr Bounthong Chitmany, Dr Phankham Viphavanh, as well as Mr Chansy Phosikham were reelected members of the new politburo of the Party.
Dr Xaysomphone Phomvihane, Lt. Gen. Chansamone Chanyalath, Dr Khamphanh Phommathat, Dr Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune and Dr Sonexay Siphandone also joined the politburo’s list of the Party.
The Central Committee comprises 69 permanent members, including 7 females. They will lead the national protection and development cause and national graduation from the list of least developed country status over the next five years.
Another eight senior officials were also elected as substitute members of the Party Central Committee.
Friday’s session of the 10th Party Congress also saw the election of nine key figures as members of the Party Central Committee Secretariat with Mr Phankham Viphavanh appointed as Standing Member of the Party CC Secretariat, and Dr Bounthong Chitmany voted as President of the Party Central Inspection Committee.
The PCC Secretariat comprises: Mr Bounnhang Vorachit, Dr Bounthong Chitmany, Dr Phankham Viphavanh, Dr Chansy Phosykham, Dr Khamphanh Phommathat, Lt. Gen. Sengnouane Xayalath, Prof. Dr Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, Maj. Gen Somkeo Silavong, and Maj. Gen Vilay Lakhamfong.
