(KPL) The Japanese government has donated meteorology and hydrology equipment to the Lao Weather Forecast Centre for improving the capacity of the disaster alert systems for weather forecasts and water level to give ample warning to the general public.
The improvement project for quality of meteorology and hydrology stations , which began implementation in 2014, is now fully completed.
The objective of this project is to improve the quality of meteorological and hydrological stations by replacing out-of-date equipment with up-to-date ones. The new equipment will improve the collecting and sending of information between the Meteorology and HydrologyStation and 18 meteorological stations in 17 provinces and eight hydrological stationsacross the country.
A satellite weather tracking system has been installed at the Meteorology and Hydrology Department, which will help give timely disaster alerts.
The donation will also help reinforce the weather and water level monitoring system for earlier and more effective warnings to the general public.
A handover ceremony for the donation was held at the Meteorology and Hydrology Department on April 29 between Mr Yukinori Nemoto, a Japanese Parliamentary member who is also Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Director of Meteorology and Hydrology Department, Mr Khounmany Khounphon in the presence of Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Mr Sommad Pholsena; Japanese Ambassador to Laos, Mr Takeshi Hikihara; the country representative of Japanese International Cooperation Agency to Laos; and relevant officials.
