(KPL) The Vientiane Police Traffic Department, in collaboration with Honda New Chip Xeng Co., Ltd, launched a road safety campaign on April 11 to prevent road accidents during Pi Mai Lao – often a deadly time of year.
The campaign, with an objective to promote road safety in Vientiane Capital, went on a loop around the city, starting and ending at That Luang square.
Last year, in Vientiane Capital, almost 50 people were reportedly injured and eight killed in road accidents during the week of Pi Mai Lao from April 12 to 17, with 96 vehicles damaged, according to Director of the Vientiane Traffic Police Department, Lieutenant Colonel Youttaphong Souvannasing.
He said that the main causes of road accidents were disregarding traffic rules as well as driving while drunk and/or over the speed limit.
“This year, over 600 traffic police will be on patrol in 98 places in Vientiane Capital,” Lieutenant Colonel Youttaphong said.
