Laos, China Mark 65 Years of Diplomatic Relations

(KPL) Lao People's Democratic Republic and the People's Republic of China marked the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations with a commemorative ceremony held in Vientiane on April 23.
The event also celebrated Laos-China Friendship Year, honoring more than six decades of bilateral cooperation since diplomatic ties were established on April 25, 1961.
The ceremony was attended by senior leaders, including Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister, and Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, along with Fang Hong, Ambassador of China to Laos. Other participants included senior government officials, diplomats, and invited guests from both countries.
In remarks at the ceremony, Mr. Thongsavanh and Ambassador Fang highlighted the steady development of bilateral relations over the past 65 years.
They noted that ties between the two countries have been elevated to a “stable, long-term comprehensive strategic partnership,” guided by the “Four Good Directions,” and reinforced by the building of a Laos-China community with a shared future.
Both sides emphasized that the longstanding friendship, cultivated by generations of leaders, has delivered tangible benefits to the peoples of both nations.
Officials highlighted key achievements across multiple sectors, including politics, security, trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
The Laos-China Railway was cited as a flagship project symbolizing connectivity and cooperation, contributing to regional and international integration.
In 2025, bilateral trade between Laos and China reached nearly US$10 billion, while cumulative Chinese investment in Laos exceeded US$18 billion. The railway has transported more than 11 million passengers and nearly 17 million tons of goods since operations began in December 2021.
Tourism has also grown significantly, with Laos ranking among the top destinations for Chinese travelers, attracting more than one million visitors in 2025.
Commitment to Future Cooperation
Mr. Thongsavanh expressed appreciation for China’s continued support to Laos’ development, emphasizing the importance of further strengthening cooperation amid evolving global challenges.
He said both sides will continue to deepen their partnership to achieve higher-quality development and contribute to peace, friendship, and sustainable growth in the region and beyond.
As part of the celebration, leaders and guests visited a photo exhibition marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and viewed a short documentary highlighting the history and achievements of Laos-China cooperation
