Khammouan Hosts Unique Local Food Contest to Showcase Culinary Heritage

(KPL) A unique local food contest was held on November 16, 2024, at the Thakhaek Secondary School grounds as part of the Khammouan Food Festival. The event aimed to highlight the province’s rich culinary traditions and promote tourism.

The contest was attended by notable figures, including Khammouan Governor Vanxay Phongsavanh, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Assembly Bounmy Phimmasone, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders. A total of 15 restaurants participated, representing nine districts and six establishments from Thakhaek.

The competition focused on celebrating Khammouan’s distinctive cuisine while introducing visitors to the province’s gastronomic and cultural offerings. It also served as an opportunity to promote Lao cuisine to both domestic and international audiences.

Participants were judged on criteria including cleanliness, hygiene, presentation, creativity, and taste. The top honors went to SeunSaep Restaurant from Nakai District, which won the first prize of 5 million kip. The second-place winner, Yommarat District, received 4 million kip, while PhuPha Man Restaurant secured third place with a 3-million-kip prize. The remaining 12 participants were awarded commendations, each receiving 1 million kip.

During the event, Governor Vanxay Phongsavanh commended the participants for their efforts and contributions to preserving Khammouan’s culinary heritage. He also donated an additional 15 million kip to the participating restaurants to encourage their continued commitment to promoting local cuisine.

“This contest underscores the importance of our unique culinary traditions as part of Khammouan’s identity,” said Governor Vanxay. “I urge our restaurant operators to preserve and promote this heritage, ensuring it remains a source of pride for future generations.”

The Khammouan Food Contest successfully showcased the province’s gastronomic treasures, enhancing its reputation as a destination for culinary tourism.
