Laos and Myanmar Discuss Expanding Cooperation Across Key Sectors

KPL - Asean 2024 Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane and Myanmar Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe held bilateral talks in Nay Pyi Taw on June 12, focusing on ways to deepen cooperation between the two neighboring countries.


During the meeting, the two ministers reviewed bilateral relations and exchanged updates on developments in their respective countries. They reaffirmed the strong traditional friendship between Laos and Myanmar and expressed satisfaction with continued high-level political dialogue and cooperation in defense and border security.
Discussions centered on expanding collaboration in trade, investment, labor, energy, transport, education, and border affairs. Both sides also agreed to accelerate preparations for the 13th Laos–Myanmar Bilateral Cooperation Committee Meeting, which is expected to further advance cooperation in these areas.


The ministers also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest and emphasized the importance of maintaining close coordination in regional forums.
In addition, Mr. Thongsavanh praised the role of the Laos–Myanmar and Myanmar–Laos Friendship Associations in promoting people-to-people exchanges and strengthening mutual understanding between the two countries.
The Lao Deputy Prime Minister concluded the talks by inviting Myanmar’s Foreign Minister to pay an official visit to the Lao PDR to continue efforts to enhance bilateral relations.
