A powerful summer storm has swept through Vientiane, damaging more than 5,400 homes and leaving thousands of residents affected, authorities said.
The storm struck around 4:00 p.m. on March 22, bringing strong winds, heavy rain and intense hail to Sikhottabong and Naxaithong districts, according to the Department of Labour and Social Welfare.
In total, 17 villages were impacted, with 5,490 homes damaged along with key infrastructure, including schools, temples, a health centre and a vaccine production facility. Officials also reported 53 damaged vehicles and nine injuries.
A military site was also hit, with 109 buildings at Battalion 11 camp sustaining damage.
The worst impact was recorded in Sikhottabong District, where more than 5,000 homes across 10 villages were affected. Viengkham and Chansavang villages were among the hardest hit, accounting for more than 2,700 damaged houses.
In Naxaithong District, seven villages reported damage to nearly 500 homes, with Sikhert village the most affected.
Authorities at local and national levels are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage while coordinating relief operations.
The Vientiane Capital Disaster Management Committee has begun distributing emergency supplies, including rice, drinking water, hygiene kits and temporary shelter materials. Initial assistance is valued at more than 1.4 billion kip.
Support is being prioritised for the most vulnerable households, particularly those whose homes were severely damaged or destroyed.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare is seeking approval to launch a nationwide fundraising campaign to support recovery efforts.
Officials say while emergency aid has reached affected communities, rebuilding will take time as damage assessments continue and longer-term assistance is mobilised.
The storm highlights the growing impact of extreme weather events on communities across Laos.
