(KPL) Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of Laos, on March 19, 2026 presided over a ceremony in Thakhek District marking the inscription of Hin Nam No National Park as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site.

The park is recognized as a transboundary heritage property shared with Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.

The event was attended by Xaysana Khotphouthone, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, along with central and provincial leaders, former officials, international organizations and invited guests.

Officials said the designation marks a major milestone for Laos, with celebrations including a parade carrying the World Heritage certificate through Thakhek, accompanied by traditional performances.

Linkham Duangsavanh, Minister of Agriculture and Environment, said the recognition follows more than 20 years of effort. The park spans about 82,000 hectares and features significant limestone karst formations and biodiversity.

Suanesavanh Vignaket, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, said the site was officially inscribed during the 47th World Heritage Committee Session in Paris on July 13, 2025.

Officials said the listing makes it the fourth World Heritage Site in Laos and the country’s first transboundary natural heritage site, reflecting close cooperation with Vietnam.

Speaking at the event, Xaysana Khotphouthone pledged to protect the site, promote sustainable tourism and support local livelihoods.

During the ceremony, Suanesavanh Vignaket presented the World Heritage certificate to provincial authorities.

Sonexay Siphandone marked the occasion by striking a ceremonial gong nine times.

The event concluded with a visit to an exhibition and trade fair commemorating the Battle of Thakhek.
