(KPL) Boualy Phanouvong, Director General of Lao National Radio, gave an interview on August 5, 2025, ahead of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of Lao Mass Media and Publishing Day and the 65th anniversary of the establishment of Lao National Radio.
Print and broadcast media organizations across the Lao PDR are preparing to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Lao Mass Media and Publishing Day, observed on August 13 (1950–2025).
In the interview, Mr. Boualay recounted the origins and growth of Lao National Radio over the past seven and a half decades.
Formerly known as Pathet Lao Radio, Lao National Radio played a vital role in fulfilling its political mission with strength and determination. It served as a powerful mouthpiece of the Party, mobilizing the people to rise in revolution and heroically resist colonial imperialists and traitors.
Pathet Lao Radio acted as a sharp political weapon of the Party, a mouthpiece of the revolutionary administration, and a platform for patriotic Lao people across the country to express their views and aspirations. It was instrumental in mobilizing all forces in the fierce struggle for national liberation.
“Following the country’s liberation, Pathet Lao Radio was renamed Lao National Radio and has since continued to grow in both scale and quality, applying modern technology as a foundation for expanding radio stations nationwide,” said Mr. Boualy.
Today, Lao National Radio plays a key role in disseminating Party policies, state laws, and the government’s socio-economic development plans. It also provides news, educational content, entertainment, and timely information on major national and international events.
Mr. Boualy noted that over the past one year, Lao National Radio has effectively carried out its professional duties, achieving progress in several areas. It has promoted Party policies, resolutions, directives, and state legislation through news programs, audio features, and visual content.
The broadcaster also focused on promoting major Party and national events, as well as political, economic, and cultural activities. In total, it produced over 1,400 hours of programming.
In addition, Lao National Radio aired 12,700 hours of content through AM and FM systems and broadcast more than 6,900 hours via FM 93 MHz in collaboration with China Media Group (CMG). It also produced videos, documentaries, and news content shared via its website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel.
Director General Boualay further underscored the essential role of Lao mass media in national development and socio-economic advancement. He emphasized that the media continues to serve as a mouthpiece for the Party and government in disseminating important information on both domestic and international affairs to the public.
