(KPL) On July 29, 2025 — Laos’ Hin Nam No National Park, located in Boualapha District, Khammouane Province, has officially been inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site—the country's first natural site to receive the designation.

The announcement was made during the 47th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held on July 13, 2025, in Paris, France.

The park was recognized jointly with Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Vietnam, forming the first transboundary natural World Heritage site in the Mekong region.

Hin Nam No is noted for its unique limestone karst formations, subterranean river systems, and high biodiversity, including several endangered and endemic species. The listing followed years of scientific research, cross-border conservation planning, and support from international partners, including the German development agency GIZ.

A formal announcement event was held on July 28 in Khammouane Province, attended by Suanesavanh Viyaket, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Vanhsay Phongsavanh, Governor of Khammouane, Linkham Douangsavanh, Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Hoang Nam, Vice Chairman of Vietnam’s Quang Binh Province, Werner Koehler, Ambassador of Germany to Laos and Representatives from UNESCO and environmental organizations.

Officials highlighted the inscription as a milestone in strengthening Laos’ global conservation profile and boosting sustainable tourism. Minister Linkham Douangsavanh reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting natural heritage and pledged enhanced cooperation with Vietnam.

He also reaffirmed alignment with Laos’ Green Growth Strategy, which targets 70% national forest cover by 2050.

A national celebration is scheduled for late 2025 to mark the historic listing.

This recognition places Laos on the global conservation map and underscores the country’s ongoing efforts to preserve its natural heritage through international collaboration.
