(KPL) On January 21, 2025, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation, visited Crown Prince Akishino and his spouse at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo. The visit was part of the Prime Minister’s official trip to Japan from January 20 to 23, 2025.

During the visit, Prime Minister Sonexay expressed his pleasure in meeting Crown Prince Akishino and reaffirmed Laos’ commitment to strengthening the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Laos and Japan, which has spanned seven decades. He emphasized the goal of deepening the bilateral relationship, advancing it to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress in Lao-Japanese relations, highlighting the close bond between the peoples of the two nations. They noted the active collaboration between governments, political parties, and parliaments, which has brought tangible benefits to both countries, including regional development cooperation.

The two leaders also agreed to further enhance cooperation, particularly in areas of mutual potential. A key discussion point was the proposal to establish a direct flight between Vientiane and Tokyo to boost trade, investment, and tourism.

Prime Minister Sonexay also conveyed heartfelt thanks on behalf of the Lao government and people for Japan’s ongoing support, which has played a crucial role in Laos’ socio-economic development. He specifically thanked Japan for its contributions to human resource development, public health, agriculture, infrastructure, and the clearance of unexploded ordnance (UXO). He also acknowledged Japan’s support during Laos’ ASEAN chairmanship in 2024.

Crown Prince Akishino warmly welcomed the Prime Minister and his delegation and expressed high regard for the visit. He wished for continued success in the Prime Minister’s official trip and further flourishing of the Japan-Laos strategic partnership.
