KPL - Asean 2024 The Government of Japan has provided US$108,610 in grant assistance to improve access to clean water for residents of three villages in Lakhonepheng District, Salavan Province, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP).

The project will extend the distribution pipeline from the existing water supply system to Naphabang Nhai, Natham and Naphabang Noy villages, helping residents gain better access to safe and clean water.
Japanese Ambassador to Laos Koizumi Tsutomu signed the grant contract with a representative of the provincial authorities in the presence of Daovong Phonekeo, Secretary of the Salavan Provincial Party Committee.
Although central areas of Lakhonepheng District already have a water supply system, the three villages remain unconnected, forcing residents to rely on deep wells and rainwater, according to the Japanese ambassador.

The project will extend treated water supplies from the existing water treatment plant to the three villages. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has also supported efforts to maintain a safe and reliable water supply.
Ambassador Koizumi expressed hope that the project would improve living conditions and sanitation in the beneficiary communities.
Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects supports relatively small-scale initiatives that directly benefit local communities and promote economic and social development in developing countries, including Laos.
The Japanese government has provided more than US$2.035 million in assistance to Salavan Province for healthcare, education and infrastructure development.
Japan will continue supporting grassroots initiatives to improve basic living standards and reduce regional disparities in socio-economic development across Laos, in line with its commitment to ensuring that “no one is left behind.”
