KPL - Asean 2024 Residents of Vientiane gathered in large numbers on Wednesday to participate in almsgiving ceremonies marking the Lao New Year, one of the country’s most significant cultural and religious celebrations.

The occasion coincided with the final day of the Lao New Year festival (B.E. 2569), traditionally recognized as the beginning of the new year. From early morning, Buddhist devotees assembled at temples across the capital, most notably at Ong Teu Temple (Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan), where the atmosphere was vibrant and filled with spiritual devotion.

Almsgiving, a central feature of Lao New Year observances, took place on the 14th day of the waning moon of the fifth lunar month this year. The ritual is widely believed to bring good fortune, prosperity, and positive energy to individuals, families, and the nation. It also plays an important role in preserving and promoting Laos’ rich cultural heritage.

Similar ceremonies were held at temples nationwide, reflecting unity and shared faith among Lao Buddhist communities. Many families began preparations early in the morning, organizing offerings and conducting rituals intended to dispel misfortune and welcome auspicious beginnings into their homes.

In addition to almsgiving, some families performed traditional Baci (soul-calling) ceremonies, strengthening family bonds and invoking blessings for health, happiness, and success in the year ahead.

Following the almsgiving rituals, devotees also carried out the symbolic bathing of Buddha statues. This act represents both reverence for the Buddha and the cleansing of past misfortunes, while inviting good fortune and renewed spiritual well-being.

The celebrations underscore the enduring importance of Lao traditions in strengthening community ties, while also contributing to the country’s growing cultural tourism sector.
