KPL - Asean 2024 The Lao News Agency (KPL) called for an ethical and human-centered approach to artificial intelligence in journalism on Friday, warning media leaders at an international summit in Seoul that technological speed must never compromise journalistic integrity.

Speaking at the 8th International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) Media Forum, KPL Deputy Director General Sivanxay Siphankham urged news outlets across Asia to adopt clear ethical boundaries as newsrooms rapidly integrate AI tools.
The forum, held under the theme "Artificial Intelligence Transformation," brought together regional media executives and political representatives to examine AI's growing impact on public communication. Attendees included Chung Eui-yong, Chairperson of the ICAPP Standing Committee and former Republic of Korean Foreign Minister.
Sivanxay acknowledged that AI offers vital operational advantages—such as breaking down language barriers, accelerating data processing, and expanding international coverage—but warned of severe risks, including deepfakes, automated misinformation, and algorithmic bias.
"In this era of AI, how do we protect the soul of journalism?" Sivanxay asked, emphasizing that AI must serve as a tool guided by human judgment rather than a replacement for professional editors.
To navigate the industry's digital shift, Sivanxay outlined three core principles for media organizations and governments:
Ethical Governance and Human Oversight: AI implementation must be anchored by strong editorial standards, state governance, and public digital literacy. She reaffirmed KPL's operational rule: "We verify before we amplify."
Respect for Cultural Context: AI integration strategies must respect national sovereignty, local laws, and cultural diversity rather than imposing blanket global models on developing nations.
Global Cooperation: International media networks and governments must collaborate to bridge the technological divide and address cross-border digital threats.
Sivanxay concluded by emphasizing that while AI provides unprecedented speed to modern newsrooms, core journalistic ethics remain essential to give that speed its proper direction
