KPL - Asean 2024 On October 28, at the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES), Mr. Thongsalith Mangnomek, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Sports, hosted a farewell call for Ms. Megan Jones, Ambassador of Australia to the Lao PDR. Representatives of relevant departments and offices were also present.

On this occasion, Mr. Thongsalith Mangnomek informed the Australian Ambassador about the progress of reforming Lao PDR's general education system to a 6+3+3 model. It is currently in the stage of revising the new curriculum, which will begin implementation in the 2027–2028 academic year for Grades 1–3 and is expected to be fully completed by the 2030–2031 academic year.

At the same time, he expressed high appreciation to the Australian Ambassador for the successful completion of her diplomatic mission in the Lao PDR.

He thanked the Australian Embassy for acting as a great bridge of cooperation between the governments of Australia and the Lao PDR across various sectors, particularly in education, science, and sports.

This cooperation has shown steady progress, notably through assistance in teacher training, improving Lao language speaking skills for children in remote areas, producing short promotional videos for education, and creating various teaching and learning videos, all of which have received a very positive response from society.

The Deputy Prime Minister also briefed the Ambassador on higher education developments, noting that MOES has established the National Teacher Training University aimed at enhancing teaching efficiency, which has led to an increase in student applications for teaching programmes.

However, further teacher training is required to align with the new curriculum to ensure more effective teaching and learning.

He also provided updates on human resource development, as well as work concerning women, mothers, and children supported by the Australian government.

In reply,  Ms. Megan Jones expressed her gratitude to the Government of Laos and MOES for their cooperation and support to the Australian government team—particularly under the Basic Education Quality and Access in Laos (BEQUAL) programme—which contributed to the success of her tenure.

She stated that education remains a priority for the Australian government, alongside the provision of scholarships.

Through the BEQUAL programme, children's learning outcomes in Laos increased from 25% in 2024 to 45% in 2026, while teacher training participation tripled.

Additionally, the Australian government continues to assist in upgrading English language proficiency for government officials. The Australian Ambassador also briefed the Deputy Prime Minister on work related to health, public works and transport, and women and children.
