Around 3,000 runners from more than 50 countries and regions took part in the Run for Children Luang Prabang Half Marathon on October 24, marking the highest participation in the event’s 12-year history and raising support for children’s healthcare in Laos.
The race began before dawn outside the Royal Palace in Luang Prabang, bringing together professional athletes, families and children for a morning of running through the UNESCO World Heritage town.
Participants competed in three categories: a 7-kilometre fun run, a 14-kilometre race and a half marathon. Around 2,100 runners joined the 7-kilometre event, while 600 took part in the 14-kilometre race and another 300 competed in the half marathon.
The event welcomed participants of different ages and fitness levels, allowing experienced runners and families to join the race while supporting a shared cause.
Proceeds from the event support Lao Friends Hospital for Children, which provides free paediatric healthcare to children regardless of their families’ financial circumstances.
The race routes passed through Luang Prabang’s historic streets and along its rivers, giving international participants an opportunity to experience the town while contributing to the local community.
The record turnout highlights the event’s growing international appeal and its role in supporting children’s healthcare. By bringing thousands of runners together, the annual half marathon helps raise awareness and funds for the hospital’s work in providing essential medical services to young patients.
The event continues to combine sport, tourism and community support, turning participation in a sporting event into a contribution towards better healthcare for children in Laos.
