Road accident in Vientiane on Apr 16
(KPL) The death toll during Pi Mai Lao celebrations nationwide from April 14-16 was 22, one less than last year.
Some 159 cases of road accidents were reported during the celebrations nationwide, dropping by 48 cases compared to last year.
A total of 286 people were injured in road accidents during Pi Mai Lao this year, and the death toll decreased from 23 last year to 22 this year, of whom five were Vientiane residents.
The primary causes of road accidents were the drunk driving and breaking traffic rules.
Police had been deployed to strictly inspect and enforce a no-drunk-driving ban imposed by the government as well as to monitor traffic, resulting in a reduced number of accidents over the three deadly days of Pi Mai Lao this year.
Road accidents usually occur along the Setthathirath, Chao Fa Ngum road in Vientiane Capital.
During Pi Mai Lao last year, there were 207 road accidents nationwide, killing 23 people. There was a decrease in the death toll during the four-day celebration of the Lao New Year 2559 B.E when compared to the previous year, although the number of road accidents increased.
