(KPL) The number of unexploded orinance (UXO) victims in Lao PDR reportedly declined from 300 in 2008 to 50 last year.
This is a great contribution to socio-economic development of the Lao government and the efforts of the UN millennium goals, the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Mr Khampheng Saysompheng said at the commemoration ceremony of the International Dayof Mine Awareness in Vientiane Capital on April 4.
“All above-mentioned achievements came from over the past two decades of efforts to solve UXO problems. As the result, more than 60,000 hectares have been cleared and freed of UXOs,” Mr Khampheng said, adding that almost 2 million UXOs have been destroyed.
More than 3,000 UXO victims reportedly survived, thanks to medical team assistance.
Last year, over 95,000 UXOs were cleared from an additional 3,400 hectares.
